Seeing Gender, the museum’s first exhibition to explore the collection through the lens of gender, is on view in the Tateuchi Gallery through Sept. 5, 2022. Non-binary and gender fluid depictions have existed in Asian art for thousands of years. With purposeful ambivalence, these portrayals of gender identity allow us to consider the limitations of duality. Explore highlights from the Asian Art Museum collection that demonstrate the complexities of gender identity with male, female, and non-binary people and deities.

This one-hour virtual lecture by one of our museum community speaker docents is followed by a half-hour Q&A.
