Thursday Nights: Lenora Lee Dance Presents “Convergent Waves: SF”

From award-winning multimedia dance company Lenora Lee Dance comes its newest site-responsive performance piece, “Convergent Waves: SF.” At this world premiere event, you will be guided through a journey set in the Asian Art Museum, where stories of community agency, resilience, and transformation unfold. The dance, to music by Vijay Iyer, Tatsu Aoki, and Francis Wong, is a collective statement for the preservation of community, as neighborhoods across the country face cultural erosion, loss of businesses, and displacement as a result of both the pandemic and ongoing gentrification.

ABOUT THE ARTIST 

Lenora Lee Dance (LLD), directed by San Francisco native Lenora Lee, integrates contemporary dance, film, music, and research. It has gained attention for its sustained pursuit of issues related to immigration, incarceration, and global conflict and their impacts, particularly on women and families. For the past 14 years, the company has been pushing the envelope of large-scale multimedia and immersive dance performance that connect various styles of movement and music to culture, history, and human rights issues. Its work has grown to encompass the creation, presentation, and screening of films; museum and gallery installations; civic engagement; and educational programming.   

Lenora Lee has been a dancer, choreographer, and artistic director for the past 23 years in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. She has been an artist fellow at the de Young Museum, a Djerassi Resident Artist, a visiting scholar at New York University, an artist-in-residence at Dance Mission Theater, and a 2019 United States Artists Fellow.
