“American Born Chinese,” the live-action adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s groundbreaking graphic novel, has arrived! Join us for a screening of the first episode, followed by a discussion with executive producers Kelvin Yu, Gene Luen Yang, and Melvin Mar, as well as actor Daniel Wu, who stars as the legendary Monkey King. The conversation will be moderated by Head of Contemporary Art Abby Chen, with an introduction by The Barbara Bass Bakar Director and CEO Jay Xu.
Now streaming on Disney+, “American Born Chinese” is a coming-of-age action comedy that has been called “vibrant, inclusive, and enlightening” (The AV Club) and “a masterful mash-up of fantasy and teen turmoil” (Entertainment Weekly). The eight-episode series follows Jin Wang, a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god. This is the story of a young man’s battle for his own identity, told through family, comedy, and action-packed Kung-Fu. The show features a powerhouse team of Asian diaspora talent in front of and behind the camera, including Emmy® Award-winning writer/producer Kelvin Yu (“Bob’s Burgers”), director/executive producer Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), and a phenomenal international cast that reunites “Everything Everywhere All at Once” stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, who join Daniel Wu, Ben Wang, Chin Han, Yeo Yann Yann, Jimmy Liu and Sydney Taylor.
