Between the Threads: Batik as Character, Cosmos, and Creation
Renowned artists visiting from Indonesia offer rare insights into the cosmic nature of batik.
A demonstration and artist talk by Agus Ismoyo, Nia Fliam, and Desmond Anabrang — expert batik artists briefly visiting the United States from Yogyakarta, Indonesia — this special presentation provides an intimate look at both the technical and spiritual aspects of a time-honored art form.
Batik uses hot wax to dye textiles with intricate patterns and designs. Requiring great concentration, it is considered a vessel for heightened consciousness and a doorway to intangible realms. This talk explores batik as a living process shaped by ecological rhythms, philosophical inquiry, and spiritual intention.
