Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with dance and music traditions from across South and Southeast Asia inspired by current exhibition Beyond Bollywood: 2000 Years of Dance in Art. Enjoy in-gallery storytelling tours, hands-on art making inspired by movement and dance, and featured performances by the Chitresh Das Youth Dance Company and Gamelan Sekar Jaya. These events offer fun for the whole family!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The mission of the Chitresh Das Institute is to present traditional and innovative kathak and Indian classical arts with commitment to community, legacy, and seva (service). Founded in 2002 to give youth the opportunity to study closely with Pandit Chitresh Das, the Institute’s Chitresh Das Youth Company continues to flourish under the guidance of original director and choreographer Charlotte Moraga. In addition to training in technique and theory, members learn the history, philosophy, mathematics, and spirituality that form the foundation of kathak and the philosophy of Pandit Chitresh Das.
Founded in 1979, Gamelan Sekar Jaya is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and specializes in the performing arts of Bali. The ensemble fosters artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works for music and dance. Gamelan Sekar Jaya has been called “the finest Balinese gamelan outside of Indonesia” by Indonesia’s Tempo Magazine; the group has performed in venues ranging from New York’s Symphony Space to LA’s Hollywood Bowl to remote village squares in Bali.
