Artist Talk: Bamboo Art Prizewinner Hajime Nakatomi

The Asian Art Museum is pleased to welcome artist Hajime Nakatomi (Japanese, b. 1974), winner of the Coffland Grand Prize in the 2024 New Generation Bamboo Art Prizes competition.
To commemorate the exhibition of this year’s prizewinners in the Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Gallery, Nakatomi will travel from Japan to present a special talk about his work. Join us for a rare look at the insights, influences, and process of this accomplished creator of innovative bamboo sculptures and site-specific installations.
About the Speaker
Hajime Nakatomi is an artist known for his exceptional bamboo weaving technique. After graduating from university and Oita Prefectural Technical Institute, he served an apprenticeship under bamboo master Shoryu Honda before establishing his own studio in 2005. In addition to exhibiting at museums and galleries in the U.S., Italy, the UK, the Netherlands, France, China, and Brazil, Nakatomi develops bamboo artworks for commercial complexes and hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto and Tokyo.
This event is co-organized by the New Generation Bamboo Art Prizes and the Asian Art Museum.
