Art Escapes: Virtual Tours Through Asia - Prestige and Protection in Indonesian Art with Natasha Reichle

A dazzling array of kris (daggers) from across the Indonesian archipelago have ignited the imaginations of museumgoers for decades. No two blades are the same: shapes and patterns convey regional and cultural diversity. Whether a family heirloom, ritual talisman, or symbol of heroic achievement, each of these distinctive objects has a fascinating story to tell.

Join us for a peek behind the screens — brand-new virtual tours led by Asian Art Museum curators showcase favorite objects, uncover hidden histories, and give you a taste of all we offer, from the oldest artworks in San Francisco to the city’s best new murals.

On Saturday afternoons, grab your preferred device, curl up on the couch, and embark on an illuminating tour through different museum galleries. With Zoom as your portal, and a specialist to guide you, you’ll have close-up encounters with works from our world-famous collection, revisit recent exhibitions, and preview new contemporary installations. Afterward, take part in a live, friendly conversation with one of our curators — all from the safety and comfort of home.

Focusing on a single subject at a time, each 20-minute tour is led by an expert who shares insights into millennia of craft and creativity and reveals the stories behind the art.

Tours are free for members. Click on the “Buy Tickets” link to reserve a ticket for the ‘Prestige and Protection in Indonesian Art’ virtual tour led by Dr. Natasha Reichle, Associate Curator of Southeast Asian Art, or a package of six or more tours at a discounted price. See the full lineup.
