Satisfy your appetite for culture on Thursday Nights at the Asian Art Museum. Roam the galleries and discover your favorite artwork, mix and mingle with friends old and new while savoring a drink and a bite to eat, shop the boutique, and unwind to the sounds of local musicians. On Oct. 28, kick off your weekend early with dynamic ensemble Kultura Kapwa and experience the joy and unifying power of tribal Philippine polyrhythmic percussion music.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Kultura Kapwa roughly translates as “being with others through culture.” Based in San Francisco, Kultura Kapwa takes pride in introducing people to Kulintang, the gong-and-drum ensemble indigenous to the Sulu and Mindanao islands in the southern Philippines and northern Borneo. The ensemble presents the precolonial music, dance, and regalia traditions of Mindanao to the Bay Area through performances, educational presentations, workshops, and school residencies. The ensemble’s musicians and dancers were trained in the traditional manner by the late master Kulintang artist Danongan Kalanduyan, a Maguindanao Culture Bearer and National Endowment for the Arts fellow.
